在股票市場,當大家看好大市,就稱為牛市;當對前景看淡,就稱為熊市。有人說是因為牛在攻擊時兩眼向上兼牛角上頂;而熊在攻擊時是兩眼向下,雙手往下拍擊。又有人指牛是群體動物,像大家升市時一窩蜂入市;相反熊剛喜愛單獨行動。其實牛熊市的起源已不可究,但牛津英文字典最早在1891年出現牛市(bull market)一詞,可能源自法語bulle spéculative(投機泡沬)。
