Dietetics, Food & Nutrition

Public awareness of the importance of nutrition and health has increased the demand for quality education in food and nutrition. Since 1995, the Dietetics, Food and Nutrition area has offered quality education in food and nutritional sciences to those with a personal or professional interest in the field.

We provide an extensive articulation network of programmes for students who wish to study part-time, from short courses, certificates, and diplomas to degree (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food and Nutrition) and Master levels (MSc/PgD in Human Nutrition / Dietetics).

Our flagship programme, the Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, is the first local programme that trains students to be dietitians. Graduates are qualified for employment as dietitians in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Department of Health and the Hospital Authority. In addition, graduates are eligible to apply for registration as dietitians with the Hong Kong Academy of Accredited Dietitians (HKAAD)​and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), UK.

The programme is offered on a part-time basis with online teaching which falls in line with the School’s mission in delivering flexible programmes which meet the needs of potential students and the community.

The programme is offered on a part-time basis (except for the clinical placement) which falls in line with the school’s mission in delivering flexible programmes which meet the needs of potential students and the community.

Holders of the MSc in Dietetics fulfill the criteria for employment as dietitians by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Graduates are eligible to apply for membership as an Accredited Dietitian with the Hong Kong Academy of Accredited Dietitians (HKAAD,HK) and for registration as a Dietitian with  the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, U.K.).

Increasing scientific evidence has shown that plant-based nutrition can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, obesity, and certain cancers. Yet, many healthcare professionals lack comprehensive training in this field.


In collaboration with the Physicians Association for Nutrition (PAN International), this programme equips physicians, nurses, dietitians, and allied health professionals with cutting-edge knowledge to integrate plant-based nutrition into clinical practice and promote sustainable health solutions. Students enrolled in this programme are eligible for a complimentary professional membership with PAN International.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, students should be able to
  1. critically evaluate the roles of plant-based nutrition on health, prevention and management of chronic diseases, aging and immunity;
  2. examine the barriers in diet modification and devise evidence-based practical strategies to support clients/ patients to adopt a plant-based diet;
  3. describe the impact of plant-based nutrition on the environment and planetary health; and
  4. integrate and apply the latest sustainable food trends and foodservice guidelines in healthcare practice.

This programme aims to provide students with the knowledge in the areas of clinical nutrition and health promotion. This programme has a number of articulation routes to degree level courses in nutrition and provides an opportunity for those who are interested in nutrition to build and develop their nutrition knowledge. It also provides continuing professional development for professionals such as nurses, teachers, health professionals and those working in the nutrition and food industry.

This programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge of basic nutrition principles and their application. The impact of food-borne microorganisms in relation to health and disease will also be discussed.

This programme aims to equip students with a comprenhensive knowledge of nutrition focusing on the essential nutritional needs of children and adolescents. Students will examine the dietary approaches for preventing and managing common nutrition related disorders in childhood and learn how to evaluate nutrition information critically.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

1. Explain the role of nutrients, food and diet in health and development;
2. Compare and contrast the nutritional requirement of adults, children and adolescents;
3. Evaluate the dietary strategies used to prevent and manage childhood feeding problems and common nutrition related diseases in children and adolescents;
4. Apply dietary guidelines to design a suitable meal plan for children and adolescents with common diet related conditions such as constipation, fussy eating, excessive weight gain;
5. Critique literature relating to nutrition and health of children and adolescents.
