Highlights

This course is designed for teachers and students who have to teach or produce advanced written texts for academic, professional or research purposes. The focus is on using product-focused, process-oriented and genre-based approaches to generate plain English texts that conform to academic and discipline-oriented standards in terms of genre conventions, rhetorical structures and discoursal features.  The instructor will demonstrate how to deconstruct and analyse model texts, journal articles and research papers in diverse contexts, invoke analytical thinking skills and develop effective instructional strategies on writing pedagogy. Participants will receive constructive feedback and suggestions on their writing products.

Programme Details

Academic and research writings are based on understanding and analysing various relevant literature and field study data hence demanding reading, writing, analysing and critical thinking skills and abilities. To be a competent instructor of writing in EAP, one needs to clearly understand (1) writing as a practice of academic literacies and a situated socio-cultural activity in disciplinary discourse communities involving development of cognitive and linguistic abilities among the learners and writers, (2) the individual needs of ESL/EFL students, and (3) the effective instructional designs and pedagogical methods.

學術及研究論文的寫作是建基於理解及分析各種有關文獻及實地考究資料的一種創作活動,因此需要擁有閱讀、寫作、分析及批判思考的能力和技巧。成為一位稱職的學術英語寫作教師,必須清楚了解(1)學術寫作是在不同專科學院及學系領域內的多元學術讀寫能力(academic literacies) 及一種規範化的社會文化活動,需要學生及作者發展其認知和語言能力。(2)以英語作為外語的學生的個人需求,以及(3)有效的教學設計和教學方法。

This course intends to enable participants to :

本課程旨在使學員能够 :

  1. apply different reading strategies to comprehend relevant literature of various research(eg.Social Sciences Research) and academic sources in terms of their purpose, content, context, audience, rhetorical structures and genre features;

    運用不同的閱讀策略,從目的、內容、語境、讀者、修辭、結構和文體等方面理解各類研究(社會科學研究)和學術文章;

  2. understand and identify the characteristics and conventions of different academic and research genres for developing academic text and research proposals and reports for the intended rhetorical purposes, situations and audience;

    了解及鑒定不同的學術和研究文體類型的特徵和規則,達致預設的寫作目標,完成合適創作情境和有效地與讀者溝通的學術文章及研究建議及報告;

  3. develop applicable and transferable generic abilities in critical thinking, problem solving, and logical analysis in major research and disciplinary discourse for telling, transforming and transpiring knowledge and expertise;

    發展合適及可轉移的批判思維、解決問題、及邏輯分析的通達能力,使用於主體研究及學科討論,以作闡述,轉化和傳播知識和技能。

  4. follow effective composing procedures of prewriting planning, brainstorming, outlining, concept mapping, drafting, revising, amending, editing, proofreading, finalizing and publishing manuscripts;

    遵循有效的創作步驟,包括寫前規劃、搜索思考、輪廓大綱、概念圖表、起草芻稿、,重覆纂改、,編輯修訂、勘查校閱、最後敲定和出版手稿;

  5. produce correct, clear and coherent writings for academic and research purposes by using appropriate, idiomatic and collocated academic, research and disciplinary vocabulary to build grammatically correct sentences and well-structured paragraphs for specific genre types;

  6. finally, devise appropriate instructional strategies by using product-focused, process-oriented and genre-based methods, and the “teaching-learning cycle” to help ESL/EFL students develop their knowledge and skills in academic, disciplinary and research writings, such as the use of PPP approach (Presentation, Practice, and Production), the TBLT  method (Task-Based Language Teaching) and the Portfolio Assessment mechanism.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
