Applicants must make sure that they fulfill the stated entry requirements (please see below “Entry Requirements”) and that they are able to attend at least 75% of the classes before applying. During application, applicants must submit a completed Declaration Form (can be downloaded from "Application Forms"). The School will begin screening in December 2024. Applicants’ enrolment will be confirmed after the application deadline, which is after Jan 14, 2025 (Tue).

Highlights

This programme is run under the “Vocational Chinese Language Programme for NCS* School Leavers”, funded by the Language Fund and supported by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), to help ethnic minority residents in Hong Kong integrate into the community. It aims at enhancing NCS school leavers' capability in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese and helping them obtain qualifications recognized by Hong Kong Qualifications Framework so as to enhance their employability. 

Foundation Certificate in Vocational Chinese Language for NCS School Leavers (Listening and Speaking) is open for enrolment for the 2024-25 school year. Students can receive a subsidy cap of 80% of the course fee with satisfactory attendance#. ​


      

The project is a Government-funded programme, supported by Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and funded by the Language Fund. 

*NCS stands for Non-Chinese Speaking.
#If students have been reimbursed for other vocational Chinese courses at QF Level 1 funded by the Language Fund in any organizations, they cannot apply for the reimbursement in this programme.

Programme Details

The programme aims to: 

  1. Help non-Chinese speakers in Hong Kong obtain qualifications recognized by the government and different sectors, and increase their employability by enhancing their basic capability in listening and speaking in Cantonese;
  2. Enable non-Chinese speaking minority residents to use Cantonese confidently in daily life and at work, and develop their interest in learning Cantonese so that they can develop to become fluent speakers in Cantonese in the future;
  3. Help parents of NCS students understand the difficulties of their children in learning Chinese in mainstream schools so that they can encourage and provide appropriate assistance for their children learning at school. 

 

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes: 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to: 

  1. Spell with Jyutping (Cantonese Romanization) and read the sounds;
  2. Use simple Cantonese to communicate with others in daily life;
  3. Use simple Cantonese grammar and vocabulary for work in different industries; 
  4. Conduct short conversations and reports on familiar topics in Cantonese. 

 

Overall Assessment Methods: 

  1. Written Test – 1 hour (50%)
  2. Speaking Test – 2 minutes (50%)

 

Syllabus: 

  1. Learn and spell with Jyutping (including initials, finals, tones, spelling rules, etc.) and learn about ‘lazy’ sound change, etc.; 
  2. Learn useful conversations in daily life; 
  3. Learn common Cantonese grammar and vocabulary to conduct simple introductions, work progress reports, presentations on daily work and to express opinions, apologize for different matters, give recommendations for customers, compare functions of products, make simple inquiries and answer questions. 

 

Award: 

On successful completion of the programme with 75% attendance and graded D or above, students will be awarded within HKU system through HKU SPACE a Foundation Certificate in Vocational Chinese Language for NCS School Leavers (Listening and Speaking).

Applicants should be non-Chinese speaking Hong Kong residents aged 15 or above, with no or very limited ability in speaking Cantonese, and are currently not studying any full-time programme.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
