Highlights

This programme can be taken upon successful completion of the Certificate in German (Upper Intermediate) or an equivalent programme of 350-370 hours. Students will practise their speaking skills, expressing opinions on culture, sport, food & drink, current affairs, local events, holidays & the world today. They will read and react to authentic texts, making comments in both the spoken and written forms. Students will also listen to songs and recordings of native speakers such as public announcements and detailed instructions. By the end of the programme, students should be able to talk about various topics in a more detailed and fluent way , write different types of texts regarding more abstract and cultural matters, summarise the main ideas when listening to clear speeches or reading a wide range of texts.

The programme is equivalent to B1+ level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

IMPORTANT Notes to Applicants:

  1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis. For enrollment in person or by post, please attach a copy of your result letter from the "Certificate in German (Upper Intermediate)".
  2. Applicants are normally required to provide information from their HKID card (for local applicants) or passport (for non-local applicants) for admission assessment and student records purposes. Applicants to award-bearing programmes will also be asked to present their HKID/passport for verification if applying in person at enrolment counters or to attach a copy of their HKID or passport if applying by post. 
  3. To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants and non-local applicants issued with a valid employment visa.   4. The online application is completed when you see the payment confirmation, which will be sent to your email address by the system. If you need the official receipt, please obtain it at one of our enrolment centres with the payment confirmation.
  5. Please check if you have enrolled in the right course by comparing the application code with the information on our website.
  6. Should you enroll online within one week before the course starts, please contact the Programme Team as soon as possible. Students should attend the first session of the class at the specified time and place unless any change is made to the advertised details. 
  7. Approximately one week before the course commencement, students will receive an email with all the details including a course schedule.   8. The course will be confirmed only upon sufficient enrolment.
  9. No refunds or transfers to a different class/ course will be approved.
  10. No make-up classes will be offered for students’ absence.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall have:

  1. (a) obtained the Certificate in German (Upper Intermediate), awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or
    (b) studied approximately 350-370 hours of German at a different institution; and 
  2. sufficient English proficiency to follow simple explanations in English.

Other applicants may be interviewed if necessary to confirm their suitability for the programme, e.g. if they have studied a similar number of hours elsewhere or have alternative experience learning the language, such as a study visit to the country.

In the absence of the evidence listed  in (1), students should contact HKU SPACE before the application deadline for further information.

Continuing Education Fund

This Certificate Programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as CEF-reimbursable, which qualifies for students to receive a refund of 80% (first HK$10,000) or 60% (remaining HK$15,000) of course and examination fees.  

In order to qualify for the CEF, you must: 

  • pass the course in terms of performance, scoring at least 50% of the marks;  
  • attend 70% of the lessons; 
  • take a recognised benchmark examination (GOETHE-ZERTIFIKAT B1) and achieve the required level after the language course concerned has commenced; 
  • submit your claims within one year upon the successful completion of the course (Note: according to the course completion date or the date of the specified language benchmark test / examination, whichever is later).

For first time enrolment

  1. For first come, first served short courses, complete the Application for Enrolment Form SF26 and bring or post the completed form(s), together with the appropriate application/course fee(s) and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres.

  2. Award-bearing and professional courses may require other information. Forms are usually available at the enrolment centres or on request from programme staff. Bring or post the completed form(s), together with the appropriate application/course fee(s) and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
