Programme Overview
Highlights
The BA (Hons) Media Production* programme will enable the students to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in media production across all media platforms as well as digital media production skills. It will give students a broad understanding and engagement of the dynamics of the creative economy and the role of media in society and the economy at a global level, to prepare students to create pathways towards employment as creative professionals in a range of contexts from digital media production companies to online storytelling.
- The programme has a strong focus on contemporary screen media which include television, film, photography, mobile/social media, and their users’ reception;
- Students have the opportunity to undertake at least one production project as part of their final-year study under the guidance of experienced media lecturers or professionals;
- Students will be assessed by a combination of practical assignments including blogs, photo essays and multimedia projects which enhance both their analytical skills and professional knowledge in digital media production.
- This programme is also offered in full-time mode with shorter duration.
*The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Media Production programme has 3 pathways. Only the pathway leading to Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Media Production (Creative Content) is offered in Hong Kong.
Programme Details
Programme Overview
Through the BA (Hons) Media Production programme, students will acquire skills in photography, video, audio and web design. They can work on and develop a range of factual media and experimental and socially engaged projects. They also develop skills in writing and research to develop innovative and appropriately framed creative media content and storytelling across multi-platforms. These are supplemented by a training in the use of software used within the industry, and an ability to respond to new developments as the industry innovates.
Production skills and thinking are underpinned by an understanding of the impact of media in its cultural and historical context and the way viewers respond to media forms and practices. Students are provided with a rigorous academic training in research methods and skills in analysis, academic writing and presentation.Duration of Study
With full exemptions granted, students can complete the programme in 24 months (part-time).

Teaching Mode
HKU SPACE and UWE Bristol lecturers employ diverse teaching modes and these include lectures, seminars, small group discussions, screenings, practical workshops, field trips, student-led research, live briefs, blended learning (classroom learning complementing with online resources, communication and discussion) and individual tutorials.
Assessment
A balanced combination of group and individual work is in execution. Students will be assessed through various forms of assignments including written work, digital media projects and portfolios, presentations, research reports, picture essays, and extended projects.
Award
Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Media Production (Creative Content)* by University of the West of England, Bristol.
Career Opportunities
BA (Hons) Media Production graduates are competitive candidates in professions such as media production, photo-journalism, publishing, the heritage sector (museums, galleries, etc.), design and events management. Graduates are trained with multiple skills to perform specialist media production, to communicate clearly through writing, visual productions and to present ideas and information in oral presentations. They are well-equipped to be team players and self-motivated employees.
Further Studies
Graduates with the BA (Hons) award are also eligible to progress onto the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Media and Cultural Critique, awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE, or other local and overseas master’s degree programmes.

The course is exempted from registration under the NLHPE Ordinance. The course operator is applying for the change of programme and award title in compliance with the Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which these courses may lead.

The entire programme consists of 12 modules. Upon fulfilling the minimum entry requirements, students enrolled in the programme will be granted an exemption from 3 modules (120 credits), normally equal to the first year of study. With this exemption, students are required to complete only 8 modules in 24 months, spanning across six semesters.

Entry Requirements
Applicants shall:
1a. hold an Associate Degree in areas of advertising and creative media/creative studies/film, television and digital media studies/cinema and television studies/creative communication/creative digital media/media communication/media production/media and cultural studies; or an Associate of Applied Social Sciences in Communication, Public Relations and Journalism.
or
1b. hold a Higher Diploma in areas of new media and communication, design, visual arts and culture, visual communication, digital and creative media, and film/TV studies.
and
2. demonstrate English proficiency with an overall IELTS score of 6 with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-test.
Graduates of HKU SPACE Associate Degree/Higher Diploma, or those with an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution, are normally regarded as having demonstrated the required English proficiency.

HKU SPACE provides 24-hour online application and payment service for students to apply to selected award-bearing programmes and to enrol in most open admission courses (courses enrolled on a first come, first served basis) via the Internet. Applicants may settle the payment by using either "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard online. Online WeChat Pay, Online AliPay and Faster Payment System (FPS) are also available for continuing enrolment in the same programme, if online service is offered.

For continuing enrolment in the same programme

The standard ‘Enrolment/Payment Slip’ is designed for students of award-bearing programmes or remaining programmes in a suite of programmes requiring continuing enrolment and it applies to most programmes.

Students should complete the “Enrolment/Payment Slip” which will be made available by relevant programme staff and return the slip to any HKU SPACE enrolment centre or post it to the relevant programme staff with appropriate fee payment.

Please note the followings for programme/course enrollment:
- To make an application online, you will need a computer with connection to the Internet and a web browser with JavaScript enabled. Google Chrome is recommended.
- Applicants should not leave the online application idle for more than 10 minutes. Otherwise, applicants must restart the application process.
- Only Early Bird Discount is supported for Online Applicants (Application). To enjoy other types of discount, please visit one of our enrolment centres.
- During the online application process, asynchronous application and payment submission may occur. Successful payment may not guarantee successful application. In case of unsuccessful submission, our programme staff will contact you shortly.
- Applicants are reminded that they should only apply for the same programme/course once through counter or online application.
- For online enrolment, a payment confirmation page would be displayed after payment has been made successfully. In addition, a confirmation email would also be sent to your email account. You are advised to keep your payment confirmation for future enquiries.
- Fees paid are not refundable except as statutorily provided or under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment).
- If admission is by selection, the official receipt is not a guarantee that your application has been accepted. We will inform you of the result as soon as possible after the closing date for application. Unsuccessful applicants will be given a refund of programme/course fee if already paid.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay
Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.
2. Cheque Or Bank draft
Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:
- bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
- or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard
Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.
4. Online Payment
Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment.
- In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
- Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
- HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
- For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.

University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol) is a university based in the English city of Bristol. It is a publicly funded higher education institution with university title and taught and research degree-awarding powers. In the area of film production and photography, UWE Bristol is ranked 4th in the UK (The Guardian University Guide 2022) while in the area of media and film studies, it is ranked 44th in the UK (The Guardian University Guide 2022).
UWE Bristol represents a tradition of professional education and training which can be traced back to 1595, when a navigation school was established as one of England’s first technical training institutions. In 1969, Bristol Polytechnic was formed. With its incorporation of a number of higher education colleges based in Bristol, Bristol Polytechnic gained its university status in 1992, becoming the University of the West of England, Bristol.
This BA (Hons) programme is delivered within the School of Creative and Cultural Industries of UWE Bristol, which offers more than 20 undergraduate, taught and research postgraduate programmes.
