This program offers students comprehensive training in social sciences, designed to foster both personal growth and career advancement. It provides a solid foundation in counselling or psychology, preparing students for advanced studies in these fields.

The Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences features two specialised tracks: Counselling and Psychology. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded either an Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences (Counselling) or an Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences (Psychology), depending on their chosen track.

Programme Details

This part-time programme is credit-based and consists of core social sciences modules and specialism modules. 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to

  1. describe and explain the basic concepts and ideas in social sciences;
  2. acquire the academic capability and practical knowledge needed for career development and further studies in the chosen field ;
  3. explain and describe the issues and applications of social sciences in their daily life ;
  4. communicate in English effectively for academic and career purposes ;
  5. explain and describe the major theories in counselling or psychology ;
  6. apply the knowledge and skills in counselling  or psychology to their daily life and work settings.

Holders of the Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences are eligible to apply for admission to the part-time Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Social Sciences*, Edinburgh Napier University (UK).

* This is an exempted course under the Non-Local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognize any qualification to which this course may lead.

Assessment

In general, the modules will be assessed by coursework (e.g. written assignment and group presentation) and written examination, with the minimum attendance requirement of 75%.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE "Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences (Counselling)" or "Advanced Diploma in Applied Social Sciences (Psychology)".

Dr Evan Choi

Background

Dr. Evan Choi, Honorary Membership Secretary of the Division of Industrial-Organisational Psychology (DIOP) of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, is a professional organisational consultant. As Senior Consultant at GML Consulting, he advises leading companies across the Asia-Pacific region on management and leadership.

With extensive experience as an Industrial-Organisational Psychologist, Evan works effectively at all organisational levels, applying his research and practical expertise to guide human behaviour. He believes that adaptability, rather than mere strength or intelligence, is key to corporate success, and helps leaders develop their unique strengths accordingly.

Educated in the United States and Hong Kong, Evan pursued his passion for understanding human minds and behaviours. His comprehensive consulting experience spans strategic and operational levels, encompassing management alignment, stakeholder management, leadership development, talent assessment, psychometric testing, and training facilitation.

Mr James Wong

Mr James Wong

Background

Mr. Wong, an experienced university and college psychology lecturer, masterfully employs various psychological techniques in his teaching, facilitating students' knowledge absorption. With a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Hong Kong, followed by a Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the United States, Mr. Wong's academic background is both diverse and comprehensive.

His exceptional aptitude for psychology is evident in his outstanding examination results. Notably, he outperformed 92% of global test-takers in the GRE Psychology test. This expertise translates into his remarkable ability to guide students in tackling psychology exams effectively.

Beyond academia, Mr. Wong has been a prominent figure in Hong Kong's popular music industry since 2009, earning accolades as a producer, arranger, and composer. In recent years, he has innovatively merged his musical talents with positive psychology principles, developing unique methods to enhance students' overall life satisfaction.

Ms Winnie Lee

Ms Winnie Lee

Background

Ms Winnie Lee is a Registered Counselling and Educational Psychologist with over 30 years of experience in Australia and Hong Kong. She lectures part-time at the University of Hong Kong's MSocSc (Counselling) Course and supervises practicum students. Ms Lee specialises in various mindfulness approaches including MBCT, MBSR, and Mindful Parenting. She works with diverse groups, from helping professionals to individuals with mental health concerns. Ms Lee is part of the OMC Teacher Partnership Programme and follows MBI-TAC good practice guides in her mindfulness teaching. Her extensive experience in psychology and mindfulness makes her an expert in the fields of counselling and personal development.

Mr Isaac Yu

Mr Isaac Yu

Background

Mr. Yu is an associate fellow and registered counselling psychologist with the Hong Kong Psychological Society, as well as the president, registered clinical supervisor, and counsellor of the Asian Professional Counselling and Psychology Association. He earned his Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology with distinction from Hong Kong Shue Yan University and studied Family Therapy at the HKU Family Institute.

Since graduating, Mr. Yu has taught courses in personal growth, group counselling, abnormal psychology, social psychology, personality and individual differences, and autism spectrum disorders. He also provides research and clinical supervision for local bachelor's and master's students.

Specializing in analysing and resolving personal, career, and life issues across various life stages, Mr. Yu offers comprehensive and preventive psychotherapy and counselling services. He utilizes psychological assessments to analyse individual talents and strengths. His extensive experience includes providing individual and group counselling, psychological assessments, and career and life planning counselling in diverse settings, such as mainstream schools, institutions specializing in autism spectrum disorders, organizations focused on special learning disabilities, and various NGOs and private entities.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall:

(a) have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 2 in five subjects including English Language, Chinese Language, Mathematics, Liberal Studies and 1 elective subject; and have 3 years of work experience;

or

(b) have gained in the HKCEE Grade E in 3 subjects and Level 2 in Chinese Language and English Language*; 

and have 3 years of work experience; 

or

(c) have gained in the HKALE Grade E in 1 AL subject or 2 AS subjects; 

or

(d)  be aged at least 25 years and with 3 years of work experience.

* With effect from 2007, HKU SPACE recognises Grade E previously awarded for Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) (Grade C in the case of English Language (Syllabus A)) at HKCEE as an acceptable alternative to Level 2 in these two subjects at HKCEE.

Applicant may be invited to attend an interview on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants should have good command of reading and written English and Chinese.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
