The Advanced Certificate in Psychology provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific study of thought and behaviours, We have supported many graduates of this course to pursue master's degree in psychology/counselling in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

For degree holders in a discipline other than psychology, the Advanced Certificate programme will provide a good understanding of the discipline and better prepare them for studies at a more advanced level.

This versatile course provides the opportunity for you to embark on a Psychology career or bring those skills to wide variety of other career paths. Based on personal merits and academic background (including your bachelor degree), holders of the Advanced Certificate in Psychology will be eligible to apply for the Master of Social Sciences in the field of Psychology from one of the universities in Hong Kong or from any overseas institutions.

 

 

 

Programme Details

Upon completion of the Advanced Certificate in Psychology, students will be able to describe and explain major theoretical approaches in psychology. They are also expected to apply knowledge in psychology to different aspects of daily life such as understanding of oneself and others, work, and so on.

Assessment

In general, modules will be assessed by coursework and written examination with the minimum attendance requirement of 75%.

1. Abnormal Psychology (30 hours)

This module aims to introduce to students the etiology (causes), symptoms, and treatment of various psychological disorders. The psychological disorders to be covered include anxiety disorders, childhood disorders, stress disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia and so on.

2. Developmental Psychology (30 hours)

This module introduces the major theories and concepts in the study of lifespan development: From infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, to late adulthood. Special emphasis will be placed on the physical, cognitive, and social development at each of the developmental stage. The socio-cultural and environmental context within which individuals developed will also be discussed.

3. Introduction to Psychology (48 hours)

This module introduces the basic principles of psychology and offers a preliminary survey of representative works carried out in various areas of psychological investigation such as sensation and perception, learning, memory, cognition, language and intelligence, aspects of human behaviour and the dynamics of motivation. There will be an opportunity to investigate some specific areas at length.

4. Organizational Behaviour (30 hours)

This module introduces students to an area of psychology that studies human and group behaviours within organizations.  The topics to be examined include: motivation, leadership, group dynamics, conflict resolution, stress management, communications and other work-related issues. The main objective of the course is to create a knowledge base from which participants can develop organizational competence.

5. Personality Psychology (30 hours)

This module examines how people are similar and how they differ in their thinking, feeling and behaviours. Students will be introduced to the major theories in the study of personality, the scientific basis of these theories, and how these theories can be used to assess, describe, explain, and predict human behaviours. Special emphasis will be placed on the applied aspects of personality psychology.

6. Social Psychology (30 hours)

This module covers the key aspects of social psychology such as attraction, social beliefs, aggression, conformity, compliance, persuasion and so on. This module covers the key aspects of social psychology such as attraction, social beliefs, aggression, conformity, compliance, persuasion and so on. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with these concepts and their application to everyday life.

 

 

Class Details

Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (normally 7:00p.m. - 10:00p.m.) and Saturday afternoons (normally 2:00p.m. - 6:00p.m.).

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
