Aligned with the University of Hong Kong's commitment to advancing lifelong learning and cultivating talent within the Greater Bay Area (GBA), HKU SPACE has actively engaged in “Contributing to Human Capital Development in the GBA” as a primary focus of the School's Strategic Plan for 2025-2030. HKU SPACE will play a pivotal role in bolstering educational progress and human capital within the GBA by delivering high-quality cross-boundary education and training opportunities tailored to the needs of participants from the region.

In addition to launching a dedicated website for participants from the GBA, the School has established a Mainland Affairs Office internally to cater to Chinese Mainland students and has inaugurated the Sheung Shui Learning Centre in the North District of the New Territories. These initiatives aim to facilitate their participation in classes, workshops, and seminars in Hong Kong, underscoring a significant step towards enhancing the teaching and learning services in the GBA.

Greater Bay Area development strategies

Given the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China's proactive drive towards promoting closer collaboration between higher education institutions in Hong Kong and the GBA, the School has identified “Contributing to Human Capital Development in the GBA” as a key strategy in its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. This initiative aims to elevate the quality and competitiveness of human resources in the region, thereby catalysing economic growth and integration within the GBA.

In a demonstration of this commitment, the School has built a dedicated website to centralise the latest information on programmes and activities. This platform enables individuals in the North District and the GBA to access up-to-date information anytime, anywhere, facilitating easy planning for further studies. Moreover, the establishment of the Mainland Affairs Office in August 2024 has reinforced connections among the three Colleges, the Community College and the International College of the School, as well as institutions, enterprises, and individuals in the Chinese Mainland. This initiative aims to advance lifelong learning, support human resources development, and facilitate academic growth, knowledge exchange and industrialisation in the region.

In April 2025, the School formalised a Memorandum of Understanding with the the School of Continuing Education of Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) to forge a partnership. The inaugural collaborative project, Diploma in Foundation Studies (E-learning Mode), will leverage the strengths of both institutions to blend theoretical education with hands-on practice. This partnership will focus on establishing an integrated training model termed “Cloud Classroom + Practice Base”, offering Chinese Mainland participants a coherent pathway for further studies and robust talent reinforcement for the Belt and Road Initiative.

New Learning Centre in Sheung Shui

As the first provider of continuing education in Hong Kong, HKU SPACE continues to invest in broadening its teaching network. Following the establishment of a new centre in Kowloon Bay, the School has inaugurated a new learning centre in Sheung Shui, located in the North District of the New Territories. This centre commenced operations in mid-May this year, offering innovative educational services to Chinese Mainland participants and marking a milestone for the School in building connections with higher education institutions in the GBA.

The Sheung Shui campus represents the School's first learning centre in the New Territories. Strategically positioned adjacent to the Sheung Shui MTR station and a mere 20-minute journey from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau, the campus provides exceptional convenience to participants from the Chinese Mainland. This development adheres to the School's motto of “bringing classes to the students” and its professional mission of extending educational opportunity into the community.

Spanning almost 20,000 square feet, the new Sheung Shui campus boasts a design that blends wood accents, vibrant carpets, and greenery to create a diverse, contemporary, comfortable, and dynamic learning ambience. The Centre features six seminar rooms, a common area, and one computer room to support both face-to-face and distance learning. Several seminar rooms are versatile spaces suitable for a range of teaching and activities including dance, yoga, music, computer skills, and culinary arts. The adaptable layout maximises space utility, ensuring optimal usage. Well-equipped and thoughtfully designed, the new campus offers an ideal learning environment for participants from the North District and the Chinese Mainland.
