60 Years of Pop, Rock & Musicals
The Annual School Concert never fails to surprise and impress and this year’s concert titled “60 Years of Pop, Rock & Musicals” was true to form at Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 4 April. It brought the audience a wonderful tribute to local popular music over the past six decades together with an inspiring musical in celebration of the 60th anniversary of HKU SPACE.
Professor Edward K Y Chen, Chairman of HKU SPACE Board of Directors, kicked off the show with a welcoming remark. The evening then started in great style with a cover version of a hit from the 1960s, “Just A Little” performed by our alumni, Raii Tan. After this came a string of Cantopop favourites with our vocal instructor, Marisa Kwok performing two breathtaking covers of golden hits from 1970s and 1980s, “Strive”《奮鬥》and “Ripple”《漣漪》. Another great Cantopop hit from the 1990s, “Can’t Let You Go”《捨不得你》was presented by another alumni, Kylis Hung.
With the audience really getting into the fun of the evening, the first half of the Concert reached a crescendo with performances from two award-winning local groups that brought us into the 2000s and 2010s. The Chung Brothers performed a rendition of “Going Along With You”《陪著你走》and two of their own songs, “Anti-establishment Blues”《時代的顛覆者》and “Lion Rock Blues”《獅子山藍調》. Renowned band, Supper Moment rocked the stage with three of their latest songs, “Anthem of Shatin Martins”《沙燕之歌》, “Same But Different”《一樣不一樣》and “Unified”《同一》.
After the intermission, the audience was drawn back to the 1960s with an abridged version of the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray JR. performed by a talented and enthusiastic cast from the HKU SPACE Community College and directed by our very own alumni of the Community College, Michelle Li of Rooftop Productions. The audience was swept off their feet by the spirited songs and uplifting beat of a story about a talented young teen and her determination to fulfill her dream. A fitting theme for a wonderful evening of fun, talent and sheer energy.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mr William Au Weng-hei, SBS, JP and patrons, the audience enjoyed a fantastic evening once again. Over HK$230,000 has been raised in the Concert, all donations raised will benefit our full-time students with financial needs.
