Hong Kong has been rated as having the most connected, reliable, frequent and well-maintained public transport network against other top cities in the world.  However, the street level pollution and emissions from our transport system, especially from motor vehicles, has been one of the major air quality challenges in Hong Kong. Therefore a clean and low carbon fuel for motor vehicles is essential to control air pollution and carbon emission for a better Hong Kong.

A high level round table discussion was co-organised by Energy Institute, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and HKU SPACE on 27 February. It was attended by stake holders from government, institutions and industries. Professor Tianshou Zhao, Chair professor , Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, HKUST , Professor Nora Tam, Department of Department of Biology and Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong, and Ms Anissa Wong, former Permanent Secretary for the Environment delivered the opening addresses highlighting issues of concern to Hong Kong.

Two separate sessions were chaired by Professor Minhua Shao and Professor Christopher Chao of HKUST with three other renowned speakers including Ms Helen Storm, Consulate General of Sweden in Hong Kong, Mr Alexander Mastrovito, Head of Sustainable Transport Solutions, Scania Asia and Oceania, and Professor Li Shi Zhong, Tsinghua University and visiting Professor, the HKUST Energy Institute.

There were over 50 participants and academics from HKU, HKUST, City University, Polytechnic University and Tsinghua University. The discussion focused on essentials for a truly clean and low carbon transport system, future of bio-renewables from business and environmental perspectives and the development of a sustainable transport system for Hong Kong and mainland China.
