Highlights of HKU SPACE Botanical and Floral Art Programmes
1) Collaboration and Professional Standard
HKU SPACE has partnered with the Institut de Artflor (IDA) to develop courses in botanical and floral art and design. In 1999, IDA was appointed by the official Dutch Florist Association (“Vereniging Bloemist Winkeliers” (VBW)) as the registered institute for the Hong Kong region, responsible for Dutch DFA and ADFA floral design courses and examinations. Over the years, IDA has collaborated with AERES University of Applied Sciences and Teacher Training in the Netherlands, VBW, and another higher education institution in Hong Kong to offer DFA/ADFA professional diplomas and certificate programs in floral design. These programs adopt European design principles and methods and have trained hundreds of students in Hong Kong to pursue careers in floral art and related fields, while also providing pathways to widely recognised professional qualifications.
2) Multicultural Perspective and Career Development
The programmes integrate European botanical traditions with global floral design elements, fostering cross-cultural appreciation and creativity. This not only enhances participants’ skills and broadens their horizons for floral design development locally and internationally, but also opens up greater possibilities and adaptability in various fields related to art, design, and plant-based disciplines.
3) Comprehensive Practical Training and Sustainable Concepts
Through real-world projects and workshops, participants gain hands-on experience, learning diverse craft techniques and applying composition, colour theory, and innovative trends to create professional-level floral and botanical art pieces. The curriculum incorporates eco-friendly practices, encouraging the use of natural and recycled materials in floral design, aligning with current ESG trends — Environment, Social Responsibility, and Governance.
4) Flexible Duration and Well-Established Structure
The award-bearing programmes feature adaptable timelines to accommodate learners’ schedules while maintaining a structured progression through modules, ensuring both flexibility and academic rigor. In addition, a variety of short workshops with different durations are available, catering to the busy lifestyle of many Hong Kongers.
5) Highly Qualified Experts as Instructors
The teaching team comprises highly qualified experts in floristry and botanical art, including certified instructors with extensive experience in the industry and international training and qualifications such as the ADFA.
