How to Apply

For Introductory Korean (Part 1), there is no entry requirement and it is suitable for beginners.
For Introductory Korean (Part 2), there is an entry requirement. Please refer to the "Entry Requirements" on the website.

Highlights

The programme aims to introduce the Korean alphabet, as well as the fundamental structure of Korean sentences. Students will be able to acquire basic vocabularies and expressions used in common daily settings and apply elementary Korean grammar to spoken and written Korean.
 

 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to
  • Memorize and recognize the Korean alphabet (Hangeul) (Modules 1 and 2);
  • Construct simple sentences indicating times, dates and places (Module 1);
  • Use elementary vocabularies and expressions related to personal information (Module 1);
  • Construct simple sentences expressing one’s experiences and plans (Module 2);
  • Give and ask for opinions and reasons in daily conversation (Module 2); and
  • Apply elementary Korean grammar to spoken and written Korean (Modules 1 and 2).

Students must fulfill the below requirements to receive the “Certificate in Korean (Introductory)” awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE: 

Introductory Korean (Part 1) and Introductory Korean (Part 2):

 

Achieve at least 70% attendance of the programme;
Pass the final examination;
Achieve the overall passing mark.

 

Upon completion of the course, students can apply for the next level courses by presenting the certificate, diploma or result slip with a passing grade. The documents are valid for 2 years from the issue date. Students must attend our entrance test if the valid date of the documents expired. Please contact programme team if you have any questions.

【E-Learning】

Students can review Korean grammar and study Korean culture through this learning platform. The learning platform provides students the supplementary materials besides the regular lessons. New students can access the E-Learning (soul2.hkuspace.hku.hk) 60 days before the course start date.

Programme Details

Students who completed Introductory Korean Part 1 will receive a result slip.
Students who completed Introductory Korean Part 2 will receive a result slip and Certificate in Korean (Introductory).
Students who successfully completed Introductory Korean Part 1 and Part 2 can apply for Certificate in Korean (Introductory).

Course information (including venue relocation or class cancellation, etc.) will be announced through SOUL (soul2.hkuspace.hku.hk). Please visit https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IHqMZcWAnvQlqmrZ0WbuBVSVIblyxbed/view?usp=sharing for SOUL log-in procedures. 

For students attending classes at Kowloon East Campus, there may be changes in the class dates and locations from June to August due to the student enrollment of HKU SPACE Community College. Classes may be relocate to other campuses. If there are any changes, programme team will announce the updated class information through SOUL. If there is no updated information announced on SOUL, please attend the class as scheduled.

Students attending classes at Kowloon West Campus are required to present their official receipt or Lifelong learner card to enter the campus. Some classes may be relocated to other campuses, so please pay attention to the update announcements. 

Please make sure the course application code, time, and location are correct before application. You may apply for class transfer but a processing fee is required. Once the class is full, no class transfer requests will be accepted. Online application will close two days before the start date. For interested students, please apply in person at any HKU SPACE enrollment centres. No class transfer requests will be accepted after the sixth week of the classes. 

For online application, application will be accepted after the payment is completed. A payment confirmation notification will be automatically sent to your email address.  Please keep this email and collect the official receipt in person at any HKU SPACE enrollment centres. 

New students can use the E-Learning online platfrom through (soul2.hkuspace.hku.hk) 14 days before the course starts. 

The course fee includes 54 hours of Korean programme lessons (100 hours for Diploma in Korean) only, and not included textbook fees. Some additional free lectures and revision classes may conflict with the regular classes. Students should consider before participating. 

Applicants are normally required to have reached the age of 18. Non-local applicants must present the original copy of a valid visa for application. Please visit http://hkuspace.hku.hk/cht/study/admission/how-to-apply for details. 

In the event of class cancellations due to black rainstorm warning signal or typhoons, makeup classes may be scheduled on public holidays. Programme team will make announcements through SOUL.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements :

  • Introductory Korean (Part 1) 
    • There is no minimum entry requirement.
  • For direct entry to module 2, Introductory Korean (Part 2), applicants shall:
    • (a) have completed Introductory Korean (Part 1) at HKU SPACE within a period of no longer than 1 year before the start of the module; or
      (b) have passed the entrance examination of Introductory Korean (Part 2); or

      (c) have attained Grade 1 of Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK).

    • Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on individual merit.

【Notice】

Applicants should make reference to the textbooks used in the previous term and the textbooks to be used in the targeted level. Textbook information can refer to our school website.

Applicants must pay a HK$100 entrance test fee. The fee is non-refundable.

The entrance test includes multiple choices questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, essay, etc. It takes around one hour.

Applicants need to bring along the official receipt and attend the entrance test on time. Programme team will not give prior notice. The results will be given to applicants within two weeks by written notice.

Continuing Education Fund

For those enrolled CEF reimbursable courses commenced before 1 August 2022, their applications for fee reimbursement should also be submitted before reaching the age of 71. Late applications will not be accepted. Please refer to https://www.wfsfaa.gov.hk/cef/tc/news/news_20220801.htm for updated information. 

This course is registered as a CEF reimbursable course. Students who have completed the course and fulfill the below criteria can receive a refund of up to 80% (first HKD$10,000) and 60% (remaining HKD$15,000) of the course and examination fees. There are no limited times for applicants to apply for the reimbursement up to a maximum of HKD$25,000 in total. However, applicant must submit the application within 1 year after completing the reimbursable course (Note: The 1 year period is calculated from the course completion date or the date of the designated language proficiency test, if applicable, whichever is later.)

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
