HKU SPACE participated in the 2021 Student Barometer exercise, the largest annual satisfaction survey of students globally, following the 2018 and 2019 waves. It was pleasing to receive an overall student satisfaction rate of 85.7%[1] . The survey was open to all students of the School and the results affirmed our dedicated efforts in enhancing students’ teaching and learning experience.
Findings in the survey showed that:
- In view of most studies moving online under the Covid-19 pandemic, questions regarding online learning experience were included in the 2021 questionnaire. For questions asking about the six online learning elements, the School outperformed the global benchmarks in four of them, namely “online tutorials”, “online lectures”, “online tests and exams” and “online group work”.
- In the area of learning experience, among all teaching elements, the School performed above the global benchmarks in six of these elements, namely “teachers’ English”, “the quality of lectures”, “learning support”, “programme organisation”, “marking criteria” and “performance feedback”;
- Of the 19 studies and facilities elements in questions asking about other learning experience, the School performed better in 9 of them, when compared to the survey in 2019.
Professor William K.M. Lee, the Director of HKU SPACE, said, “We are excited to know our good performance in different aspects of the survey, especially the online learning experience. To cope with the outbreak of Covid-19, and as part of the School’s long-term strategy to develop online learning, we moved rapidly to provide online learning for our students. We have invested significantly in equipping classrooms for virtual learning and training both full-time and part-time teachers in the effective use of the new technologies. We have striven to ensure that the quality of our online provision is of the high standards we expect in HKU SPACE. The result reflected that our students are satisfied with our quality of teaching and learning with new online learning pedagogies.”
The Student Barometer survey, the largest annual satisfaction survey of students globally, was conducted by the independent research agency “i-graduate” to collect feedback on student experiences in teaching, learning, programme content, assessment of graduate outcomes, and student support. In the 2021 round, the survey received input from around 168,000 students from 107 institutions in 15 countries.
[1] The overall satisfaction rate means that the percentage of respondents replied "satisfied" or "very satisfied" to the question, "Overall, how satisfied are you with all aspects of your experience at your institution?".
