Highlights

This course is a continuation of Part I, but taking Part I is not a requirement as each unit is self-contained. Similar to Part I, this course is designed for individuals who aim to enhance their writing skills for creative, academic, and professional purposes. It instructs and examines the various sentence patterns — ranging from basic to advanced — that professional writers adeptly employ to achieve sophisticated structural effects.

Programme Details

Students will acquire the ability to utilize fresh language and vivid imagery instead of clichés, and will learn how to make skillful structural and stylistic choices to emphasize key points, create surprises, and group parallel ideas using parallel syntax, punctuated with variations to prevent dullness.

Elements such as tone, rhythm, color, word choice, syllable usage, and figurative language, which are essential for elegant writing, will be taught and practiced, along with guiding criteria to evaluate your own writing.

Topics include:

  • Exploration of Stylistic Techniques
  • Effective Applications of Coordinated and Subordinated Structures
  • Poetic Syntax: Syntax that Encourages Creativity and Originality
  • Types of Advanced Phrases and Literary Techniques
  • Cultivating a Writer’s Ears and Voice
  • Stylistic Tools: Tone, Meters, Colors, Diction, Syllables, and Comparable and/or Metaphorical Language

Course Outline

Session 1

introduces two impactful aesthetic syntaxes writers frequently employ to introduce or conclude a paragraph. These techniques effectively draw attention to essential points and enhance the overall writing.

Session 2

focus on the advanced use of gerunds in stylish patterns. They will learn to craft episodic, cinematic narrative sequences using gerund phrases in stylistic patterns. Additionally, students will learn to group actions and turn them into measures, ideas, aims, steps, or acts. They will also learn to use gerund phrases to add depth to an advanced simile pattern.

Session 3

emphasizes the application of an analogical pattern: A is to B as C is to D. In this lesson, students will learn how to employ basic and advanced analogical patterns to communicate intricate comparisons within different aesthetic styles effectively.

Session 4

explore a variety of techniques to refine their ability to discern and appreciate different sounds. These techniques encompass understanding tone, identifying rhyme patterns, grasping rhythms and meters, mastering syllabic structures, and recognizing semantic relationships within rhymed words.

Session 5

explore the development of colors and their expanded applications to senses, sounds, emotions, abstract ideas, and temperatures, rather than just concrete objects.

Session 6

cover some advanced inverted patterns to emphasize critical points. To summarize the course, we will analyze selected excerpts to demonstrate how authors apply the skills learned throughout the weeks.
