Programme Details
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. design a sequenced teaching programme that addresses important areas of technique and interpretation;
2. identify a broad range of teaching approaches that can be used across a wide spectrum of levels and abilities;
3. develop an overview of pedagogical approaches and techniques for teaching; and
4. apply teaching strategies that reflect a sound understanding of a composition.
A ‘Certificate for Module (Advanced Piano Pedagogy)’ will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE to students who meet ALL of the following:
- passed the assessments
- achieved at least 70% of attendance

1. Developing teaching philosophy
2. Beginner piano methods
3. Approaches in teaching adults and young students
4. Approaches to interpretation
5. Approaches to effective practice strategies
6. Teaching the variety of touches at the keyboard
7. Survey of etudes and piano literature for different levels of students
8. Group piano instruction techniques

Practical Teaching Demonstrations |
Practicum instruction of a piano student. Evaluation will be based on lesson planning, instructor’s ability to incorporate effective pedagogical methods within the context of the lessons. |

Entry Requirements
Applicants shall:
1. hold a bachelor’s degree, preferably in music, awarded by a recognised university, and
2. have passed the Grade 8 piano examination under ABRSM, or equivalent.
If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:
a. an overall band of 6.0 with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or
b. a score of 550 in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 in the internet-based TOEFL; or
c. HKALE Use of English at Grade E; or
d. HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3; or
e. equivalent qualifications.
Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on individual merit.
Applicants will be required to submit a video clip of 10-15 minutes of their own piano performance or teaching demonstration.
Shortlisted applicants might be invited for an interview.
